Discovering the Magic of Cyanotype Art: A brief history & how we incorporate it into our studio

Cyanotype, a photographic printing process known for its distinctive blue-and-white aesthetic, has been capturing the imagination of artists and photographers for over a century. Invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842, the cyanotype was originally used for scientific and architectural purposes due to its ability to produce accurate, detailed reproductions of technical drawings and maps. Over time, the artistic potential of cyanotype was realised, and it became a popular medium among photographers and artists seeking to create unique and striking images.

Today, the cyanotype is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, with artists and photographers around the world exploring its potential in new and exciting ways. At Garwood Studios, we specialise in creating bespoke cyanotype artwork that captures the beauty and magic of this iconic process. We combine traditional techniques with modern artistic vision to produce one-of-a-kind pieces that are as beautiful as they are unique.

Our process begins with hand-coating high-quality handmade paper with a light-sensitive solution. This textured paper is then exposed to UV light or sunlight, which causes a chemical reaction that creates a beautiful blue-and-white print. The resulting print is then hand-painted with individual brushstrokes, creating a tactile quality that invites the viewer to explore and touch.

Incorporating cyanotype into our studio practice has allowed us to explore the rich history of this iconic process while infusing it with our own artistic vision. The ethereal quality of cyanotype, combined with the hand-painted brushstrokes, creates pieces that are not only beautiful to look at but also possess a unique and timeless quality.

At Garwood Studios, we are inspired by the poetic beauty of Anna Atkins' pioneering work with cyanotype. Her delicate prints of algae specimens, created using the same process we use today, are a testament to the ethereal quality of cyanotype as an artistic medium. Her attention to detail, her scientific precision, and her artistic vision continue to enchant and inspire us in our own work.

We believe that cyanotype, like a dreamy blend of photography and botany, has the power to capture the essence of the natural world in a way that is both precise and transcendent. Our bespoke cyanotype artwork, with its fluid brushstrokes and intricate lines, is a tribute to the legacy of Atkins and other visionaries of the medium. Through our work, we strive to honour their poetic spirit and to awaken a sense of wonder and enchantment in those who view our pieces.

Whether you're drawn to the scientific accuracy of Atkins' work or the ethereal beauty of our own creations, we invite you to explore the magic of cyanotype with Garwood Studios.
